Wood Care Tips from the Experts at Cox's Fine Floors:

Purchase a flat-head mop that works with a terry cloth cover or velcro pad along with a 'water based' hardwood floor cleaner. We suggest using Bona hardwood floor products. Oil soaps, wood polishes and other cleaners (overspray) can damage the wood floor finish when used on or near the wood floors and can also cause problems during refinishing. Be careful in choosing your hardwood floor cleaner and when using dusting products near your hardwood floors.
Always vacuum or sweep before you clean your hardwood floors.
Lightly mist an 8' x 8' area of your floor with a hardwood cleaner.
Using a back and forth motion (going with the grain), clean the floor surface with your terry cloth mop.
If a spill occurs, soak up the bulk liquid promptly. Mist the affected area with hardwood floor cleaner and clean with the mop.
Cleaning your hardwood floors once every 1-2 weeks is recommended. Frequency for general cleaning depends on the amount of traffic on your floors.
Replace pad on mop as one becomes soiled. Most pads are machine washable and reusable.
Place feet protectors on all feet of furniture. Cutting bottom of chair legs straight helps keep the chairs from digging into the floors.

Use area rugs on high traffic pathways. Rugs should allow the floor to "breathe". Avoid rugs with rubber backing or other non-ventilating material. Keep in mind that where rugs are placed, the flooring under the rug may fade or darken depending on wood species. Very IMPORTANT: Room temperature should stay around 70 degrees, with humidity level between 30%-50%

Maintenance Tips by Cox's Fine Floors:

Floors with oil and urethane-type finishes are extremely durable. With just minimal care your floor will look beautiful for years to come. The key to preserving your floor is protecting its finish. Hardwood floors require minimal care, but it is important that you provide regular care.

Wipe up spills with a soft dry cloth and never wet mop a hardwood floor.

Keep your pet's nails trimmed.

Throw rugs or area rugs should be used in high traffic areas or pivot point areas, such as in front of kitchen sinks.

Use doormats at the entrances to your home to help trap dirt and grit.

Sweep your floors regularly. Dust mops can also be helpful in keeping dirt, dust and grit under control, but be sure to check that the dust treatment is approved by your floor's manufacturer.

Vacuum your floors with a soft bristle attachment. Never use an upright vacuum with a beater bar as they can scratch and dent a floor.

Place glides made of felt under the legs of furniture, especially chairs, to prevent scratches. Clean the glides occasionally to ensure stones and grit do not become imbedded.

Lift furniture when moving it to avoid scratching floors. Shoes with exposed nails or metal heel supports will badly damage your floor. Also, shoes that have deep treads are prone to trapping dirt or gravel and damaging your floor.

Be aware that high heels can damage a hardwood floor.

Don't use any cleaner not approved by the manufacturer of the floor.

Post Treatment Suggestions for Newly Finished Floors:

Please wait 4 to 6 hours before walking on floors with stocking feet and 24 hours for shoes.

Allow 48 hours for furniture and pets.

Do not use water for one week.

Allow 1 -2 weeks before placing carpets or other area rugs.

Use a humidifier in conjunction with a furnace or air conditioning system to maintain relative humidity in the home at 30-50%. This will maintain the moisture in the wood and minimize cracks between the boards.

Have your floors buffed and recoated every 2 to 3 years in high traffic areas and 3 to 5 years in areas of lower traffic.

Preventive Maintenance for Hardwood Floors:

Use dirt-trapping, walk-off mats at all exterior doors to help prevent dirt, grit and sand from getting inside on your floors. Throw rugs or small area rugs just inside the entrances are also helpful.

We recommend putting small Berber carpet or felt pads on the legs of all your furniture. Clean the glides periodically so grit does not get caught on them and replace as needed.

Barrel type roller casters are better than ball casters which will cause damage. Avoid plastic casters. We recommend soft rubber replacement casters.

Wipe up spills immediately with a damp cloth.

Keep high heels in good repair. Heels that have worn down or lost protective caps, exposing the steel support rod in the heel can dent any floor surface.
